Iron technology had progressed considerably from the 1740's to the 1860's, but iron guns did fail during the Civil War and the trunnions that I have heard of being knocked off during the War came from being struck by projectiles.

May 20, 2018 · There are now two small iron guns--both replicas--without carriages that have been emplaced on Alamo Plaza in the approximate position where period illustrations showed un-mounted gun tubes lying in the Plaza of the old mission-turned-fort.
