Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) is suing PowerSchool, a student information system provider, for a data breach affecting nearly 500,000 current and former students and over 23,000 staff.

PowerSchool said it paid a ransom in exchange for the data's destruction, though cybersecurity experts have consistently warned since the hack not to trust that the hacker has destroyed the data.
