While Hurricane Erin strengthened into a Category 5 storm on Saturday in the Caribbean, the first Atlantic hurricane of the season will only nod to Hilton Head as it passes offshore early next week.

Hurricane Hunters have filmed themselves flying through the eye of Hurricane Erin.

Erin's outer bands will produce rainfall of 3 to 6 inches across the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, with isolated totals of up to 8 inches.

The hurricane center warned that heavy rain in some areas could trigger flash flooding, landslides and mudslides.

Indirect impacts such as rough marine conditions and elevated rip current risk will be possible along the east coast for the first half of next week.

Erin is expected to produce dangerous surf and rip currents along the beaches of the Bahamas, much of the East Coast of the U.S., including Florida, and Atlantic Canada next week.
