Four young girls from the Twin Cities were rescued by a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew after becoming stranded on a small island in Lake Superior.

The girls, ages 8 to 14, were stuck for hours on the rocky island until they could be airlifted off by a rescue team from Traverse City.

The helicopter took off from Traverse City and airlifted the children to awaiting medical crews, who cleared them before returning them to their parents in a nearby field.
