New York City began increasing its police patrols on its subway overnight in an effort to combat crime on the transit system. Spikes in crime on the subway have put the system in the national spotlight as offenses ranging from petty theft to stabbings and murders have been publicized in the past year.

Only half the cash needed for the 300-cop, six-month surge is lined up — and Hochul asked for the remaining funds in the budget plan she unveiled Tuesday.

Uniformed cops on trains began rolling out Monday night, and eventually two officers will ride every train running between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., the department said.

LONG ISLAND - A former NYPD officer died after being found unresponsive off the coast of Gilgo Beach on Sunday, according to the Associated Press. Jack Shapiro, 54, was pulled ashore by a bystander while surfing in Long Island’s frigid waters. Despite receiving CPR and being rushed to a nearby hospital, he was pronounced dead.
