Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin is doubling down on efforts to address the growing migrant crisis in his state by proposing legislation that would ban sanctuary cities and require localities to cooperate with federal immigration authorities.

A budget amendment seeks to force counties and cities to cooperate with federal immigration officials to deport illegal immigrants who commit violent crimes.

If approved by the General Assembly, the change would remain in effect only for the final year of the state’s two-year budget. The plan could be held up in the legislature.
