About 500 workers at Samsung's plant in south India are holding a sit-in to protest against the suspension of three employees, and the company has deployed contract workers to fill the gap, two sources said.

The sit-in strike by the employees, about 500 of them (from a total of 1,750), would continue if their immediate demands are not met with, union sources said.

Employees at Samsung's Sriperumbudur plant in Tamil Nadu are on strike, demanding reinstatement of three suspended union members. The strike follows previous disputes over worker rights and union recognition.

The Tamil Nadu labor department has formally recognized the Samsung India Workers Union (SIWU) today. The move comes after the Madras High Court on December 6, directed the department to process the union's application within six weeks.
