President Joe Biden announced Thursday that he would commute roughly 1,500 sentences of people who served their sentence on home confinement during the COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to more than three dozen pardons.

"I absolutely think that Hunter deserves a pardon here, but I disagreed on the timing, the argument and sort of the rationale," Anita Dunn said.

The president is also pardoning 39 Americans convicted of nonviolent crimes. The move follows a pardon for his son Hunter, who was prosecuted for gun and tax crimes.

The pardons and clemency come over a week after the president signed an unconditional pardon for his son Hunter. Officials said last week that the White House was listening to demands for Biden to extend the same grace to thousands of people wronged by the U.

The 1,500 people had been serving long prison sentences that would have been shorter under today's laws and practices. They had been on home confinement since the COVID pandemic.

Despite the unpopularity of his decision, the president’s approval rating has not shifted meaningfully since before his party lost the White House to Trump.
