Omer Neutra, who had Israeli and American citizenship, was doing military service in Israel when Hamas invaded. His parents have been high-profile campaigners for the hostages.

The Israeli military said Monday an Israeli American soldier who was believed to have been taken hostage alive on Oct. 7, 2023, is now presumed to have been killed during Hamas’ attack and his body taken into Gaza.

An Israeli soldier held captive in Gaza has died, the military said on Monday. A military statement identified the soldier as Omer Maxim Neutra, who served as a tank platoon commander in the 7th Armored Brigade. According to Israel’s Army Radio, the body of the soldier was still held by Hamas in the Palestinian enclave.

Hamas is still holding around 100 hostages inside Gaza, at least a third of whom are believed to be dead. The Biden administration says it is making another push for a ceasefire and the release of the remaining hostages, after nearly a year of indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas repeatedly stalled.
