The Louisiana Department of Health said on Friday it has detected the first presumptive positive human case of H5N1 bird flu infection in the U.S. state. The individual is a resident of southwestern Louisiana and is currently hospitalized.

LDH said 60 human cases have been reported nationwide as of Dec. 13, all linked to contact with infected animals. No human-to-human transmission has occurred in the U.S.

A person in southwest Louisiana became ill with bird flu, or H5N1, after coming in contact with sick and dead birds, according to the Louisiana Department of Health. It is the first case of the highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza in Louisiana.
