NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City museum is opening an exhibit of rarely displayed maps that provide a blueprint of the transformation of the original 13 colonies into the United States of America.

Map: The British Colonies By the early 1600s, England was eager to gain a colonial foothold on the North American continent. The first enduring settlement was founded at Jamestown in Virginia in 1607.
