Canada's incoming prime minister is an unflappable technocrat with a long history of public service. He led the country through the financial crisis before helping the UK cope with Brexit - but whether he is the right person to cope with the US president remains to be seen.

Justin Trudeau, who was first elected prime minister in November 2015, announced on Jan. 6 his intention to resign as Liberal Party leader and prime minister.

Mark Carney’s challenge will be to differentiate himself from Trudeau and take on Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre. If Carney wins he's expected to call for an early general election.
