An unexploded WWII bomb discovered near tracks leading to France's busiest train station has severely disrupted rail service as police work to disable the device.

All domestic and international trains at Gare du Nord, Europe's busiest train station, came to a halt Friday after an unexploded World War II shell was discovered, officials said.

The police successfully defused the explosive device, which weighs more than 1,000 pounds and was found near tracks north of the French capital during landscaping work.

PARIS - Rail services resumed on March 8 at Gare du Nord station in Paris, one of the busiest rail hubs in Europe, after all trains were cancelled for much of the previous day following the discovery of a World War II bomb.

The discovery of the unexploded WWII bomb outside of Paris caused all Eurostar traffic coming in and out of Gare du Nord station to be “completely halted,” the railway company told PEOPLE in a statement.

Eurostar has cancelled all trains from London until at least mid-morning after the discovery of an unexploded Second World War bomb disrupted traffic at Paris’s busy Gare du Nord station. “An unexploded bomb from the Second World War was discovered near the tracks,” French national railway company TER said.

The unexploded bomb was found just over a mile from tracks serving France's busy Gare du Nord station, Eurostar reported.
