LG has stopped making all its Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray players, including well-known models like the UBK80 and UBK90. While you can still buy the players that are currently in stock, LG has announced that it won’t produce anymore in the future.

One of the last major electronics companies still manufacturing Blu-ray players has hit stop (or at least pause for now) on its two remaining devices. LG will no longer manufacture the UBK80 and UBK90 UHD Blu-ray players, which it introduced back in 2018.

The list of manufacturers of UHD Blu-ray players continues to shrink. LG is exiting the market: The manufacturer has already removed the German product pages, while the US pages explicitly state "discontinued".

LG tells FlatpanelsHD it could produce more units if demand increases, although it hasn’t developed a new Blu-ray player since 2018.

It has been a tricky year for 4K Blu-ray. We have lost track of how many nails have been hammered into its coffin, though there have been a few rays of light to signal hope for the format, such as a promising message regarding sales from a major high street retailer.

Sony recently wound down blu-ray production, and now top competitor LG is following suit. No more disks, no more players. For major manufacturers, the format (if not optical media entirely) will soon be history.
