Former Illinois Governor George Ryan has died at the age of 91. He served prison time for federal corruption charges.

A Republican and former pharmacist, he cleared the state’s death row and imposed a moratorium on capital punishment. He was later imprisoned for corruption.

His one term as governor ended amid accusations he used government offices to reward friends, win elections and hide corruption that played a role in the fiery deaths of six kids.
