Apple plans to phase out the technology that currently powers its Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections in favor of custom chips, further reducing its dependency on the third-party providers, Bloomberg reported on Thursday.

Apple Inc.’s ambitious plan to create in-house components for its devices will include switching to a homegrown chip for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections starting next year, a move that will replace some parts currently provided by Broadcom Inc.

Apple has already seized a leadership position with Apple Silicon. Now, it seeks to build a second bridgehead in networking chips so it can make the 5G chip, the Wi-Fi chip, and Bluetooth chips used inside its devices. Why?
