Established improv theater company, Unexpected Productions, began leasing the building 1991. Soon after, a patron waiting in the ticket line to see Theatresports, a popular competition improv comedy show (still running today), stuck a piece of chewed gum to the wall, topping it with a penny. Others followed suit. By the end of 1995, the wall was covered with coin-topped chewed gum offering. One day, someone in need of money to all the coins, but left the gum. The idea stuck.

Don't knock yourself out to make a special trip to see it, but if you're nearby go for it because it is pretty interesting. It is, however, pretty disgusting. Full review by morrigan716

No, it's in an alley below/underneath the Pike Place Market, just down from the Market Theater. If you are looking at the main entrance to the Pike Place Market, you will find stairs at the left of the fish market. When you go down those steps, you will see the Market Theater. The Gum Wall is in the alley to the left of the Market Theater. It's not a long walk, and an interesting thing to see.

Just like in the case where any large number of items exist in one place, one person thought it was cool - then more and more follow. Eventually it turns into an icon and a must see. Truly unique!
