While we went over the pass from Georgetown, we didn't drive into downtown Denver. According to Google maps, it's a 2 hour drive, but I would recommend you add at minimum an extra hour (or more) to the trip. There's lots of great scenic views on the trip over the pass and you'll want to stop for pictures, etc.
What is the likelihood of getting a walk-in campsite in early July at the campground? We'd like to do some tent/car camping for three nights over a weekend, but slightly nervous about not being able to guarantee a spot.

There are many camp sites at Guanella pass however they do fill up fast. My suggestion is to arrive as early as possible on Friday to have the best shot at finding a site.
